April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, a time to reflect, recommit, and reimagine what it means to truly protect our children.
At The Defensive Line, we know that child abuse doesn’t just leave physical scars. The emotional and psychological wounds often linger for a lifetime. Survivors of childhood abuse are far more likely to experience depression, anxiety, PTSD, and other serious mental health challenges as adults. But the trauma doesn’t stop there. Research has shown that childhood abuse can also lead to chronic physical illnesses like heart disease, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes.
This isn’t just heartbreaking. It’s a public health crisis.
But there is hope.
Mental wellness is one of the most powerful tools we have in both preventing abuse and helping survivors heal. When we foster environments where young people feel seen, supported, and safe to express their emotions, we begin to chip away at the silence that allows abuse to thrive. When we talk openly about mental health, we reduce stigma and open doors to healing.
Early intervention matters. So does access to therapy, community support, and trusted adults who listen without judgment. When we invest in mental health resources, we’re not only helping individuals. We’re breaking cycles of trauma across generations.
This month, we urge you to stand with us in building a world where no child feels invisible in their pain, and where every person has the tools to live with strength, dignity, and hope.
Because healing begins with prevention. And prevention begins with us.
With love and purpose,
Chris & Martha Thomas
